1pm - 1.45pm
Alex Norris presents
The Art of The Diary

(45 minutes)

This incredible exhibition and talk has been 20 years in the making. London-based artist, tutor and entertainer Alex Norris has been making ‘log books’ for two decades. They begin as thin folios and end up being huge, expansive, stuffed volumes of observations, sweet-wrappers, postcards, found material and drawings, all of which echo The Beatles Yellow Submarine era animation style and 1970s children’s illustrations. A record of the artists’ adventures, these log books have been with Alex during his bizarre life as an improv-comedian, children’s entertainer and voyeur of the London art scene. Never before exhibited, a must for anyone interested in printed ephemera, diaries, scrapbooking or psychedelic illustration!

This is a hands-on exhibition, talk and optional mini-workshop

(Suggested audience – Adults and children 12+)

2pm – 2.45pm
A Family Affair
Award Winning Scottish Writing

(45 minutes) Thanks to Waterstones, Ayr featuring readings from:

Eleanor Thom, author of The Tin-Kin
Jason Donald, author of Choke Chain
Karen Campbell, author of The Twilight Time, After The Fire and Shadowplay

Writers Thom, Donald and Campbell have differing styles, but share the theme of family. The writers are also winning multiple awards and critical acclaim. Jason Donald’s highly praised Choke Chain is set in a poor white South African neighborhood during the 1980’s. Two brothers mature while their family misfires under a strict and dishonest patriarch whom they adore. Karen Campbell’s Shadowplay sees detective Anna Cameron promoted to Chief Inspector and moved to a new division. It should be a turning point for her, but her mother falls into a coma in a foreign country. Eleanor Thom’s The Tin-Kin is historical fiction forged from meticulous research. When her aunt Shirley dies, Dawn finds herself back in her claustrophobic home town in Northern Scotland for the first time in years. She discovers an album of photographs, curling with age, that depict a Traveller community in the 1950s.

Don’t miss this chance to hear some of Scotland’s top authors with Waterstones on-site, selling books in the venue.

(Suggested audience – Adults and teenagers from 15+)

6pm – 6.45pm Finale
Ambient Ayr

Ayr's Electronic Music Commission (45 minutes)
This is a really special event.

We’ve topped and tailed our day at the Council Chambers with two events, the likes of which would be an excellent introduction to “alternative” arts. The finale is the premiere of a series of music commissions produced especially for Ayr Alternative Arts Day!

Ambient Ayr - Three Scotland-based electronic musicians were given a brief to make a ten-minute film to be performed with live electronic musical accompaniment. Whether it’s a ‘laptop set’ of software-based loops and mixing, or whether they’ve brought guitar effects units and home made hardware, this event is all about new pieces of work made especially for us. The musicians are also filmmakers, given cameras to film meditative sequences of the Auld Toon. They will be presenting the finished results, live at the event.

A must for film fans, and those with tastes in unusual immersive music!

This event will be archived for Ayrtime.org
